Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports |

School Plan for Single Pupil Achievement Presented to the School Board 3/12/09
I am Irene Preciado, Principal of our Dual language Immersion elementary school Sherman Oaks where students succeed in English Spanish from kindergarten through sixth grade. I am very happy to present the high leverage activities of our school plan. The high leverage activities are Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, English/Spanish Language Development and Dual Language Immersion.
Within the goal of school climate, we identified Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports as a high leverage activity. Our team of classified and certificated staff is in the process of receiving training, taking this training to the school site and developing the program. We have developed expectations, school areas, a system that includes: acknowledgment, teaching and referrals. Our school site council and English learner advisory committees have been informed while other parents have received information at meetings and home mailers. More involvement will be sought as the program further develops. Launch off date for PBIS - Tuesday, March 17, 2009
Our other two high leverage activities are at an earlier stage; we started delineating on Dual Language Immersion earlier in the year and will be revisiting it after we define our other high leverage activity: English Language Development which will also include Spanish Language Development. Most of our teachers have either been trained or will be receiving training in strategies to teach English Learners – Including GLAD Guided Language Acquisition Development and Thinking Maps – Most of our teachers have been or are scheduled to attend the GLAD training. Every teacher has received training in Thinking Maps. A group of our teachers received training for trainers and they trained the entire staff and these tools are being successfully implemented in all classrooms. Additionally, we have received training in strategic schooling which is a component of language development both for second language learners and the dual language immersion.
A lot of work still ahead of us, but we have all the elements for a successful implementation of all three high leverage activities. We have highly energetic and devoted staff, instrumental district and a community that supports us.
