Sherman Oaks Dual Language Immersion School

A Message from the Superintendent - 5/16/18

Dear Sherman Oaks Families:

I am writing to let you know about some changes that will be coming to Sherman Oaks this summer. Principal Raul Lomeli will be leaving Sherman Oaks at the end of this school year. He remains committed to ensuring that students receive rigorous quality education through their last day of classes in June.

I am happy to announce that your new principal for 2018-19 will be Mr. Marco Chavez.

Mr. Chavez brings to our school a wealth of experience and curriculum knowledge gained in an educational career that spans 23 years. He is coming to us from the San Mateo County Office of Education (SMCOE) where he has been the Administrator for Board/Superintendent Support and Community Relations. One of his responsibilities in this role was to provide leadership and direction for county-wide initiatives.

Before that, he was Director of the SMCOE’s Networks for Success (N4S) team, through which he forged productive partnerships with many of that county’s school districts and helped them make impressive progress in improving student achievement. In that role, he also provided professional development and coaching to teachers in data analysis, strategies for supporting English Learners (ELs), culturally responsive education and parent and family engagement. He also coached principals and district office staff on effectively implementing and monitoring initiatives.

His career includes 16 years in Ravenswood School District, where he served as the Director of Categorical Programs and Multilingual Services, principal and classroom teacher. Prior to that, he was a teacher at River Glen Elementary, in San Jose Unified School District, and was a Professor of English at the University of Colima, in Mexico.

He holds a Master’s degree from San Francisco State and a Bachelor’s degree from Notre Dame de Namur University.

We believe Mr. Chavez provides the leadership and stability necessary for Sherman Oaks to be the premier Spanish Dual Immersion school in the county and beyond. We are coordinating a get-acquainted meeting in the near future to introduce Mr. Chavez to the Sherman Oaks community, and we will send the dates and times once the information is finalized.

Sincerely,

Shelly Viramontez, Ed.D.,
Superintendent
