Sherman Oaks Parents/Guardians,

Together with our teachers, staff and Assistant Principal, Pablo Viramontes, I want to welcome our students and school community back to Sherman Oaks.  I hope all of our families had a fun summer where great experiences were had and lasting memories made.  Sherman Oaks is ready to welcome our students back to engage in meaningful learning experiences and continue to move toward reaching our goal of becoming bilingual and biliterate.  Our enthusiastic and committed teachers have been working during the summer in planning sessions, attending professional development, and getting our classrooms ready.  I am confident that together we will have a productive and enriching 2018 – 2019 school year!

As newer members to the Sherman Oaks community, Mr. Viramontes and I have been reviewing information, listening to feedback and learning of the great things our school has to offer.  It is evident to us that the culture of the school is centered around our students’ well-being and we value that.  Our work will continue to focus on the development of Professional Learning Communities (PLC) for our teachers, strengthening of our dual immersion program, and ensuring that all of our students learn our essential standards.  Certainly, a safe and supportive school environment, as well as providing social-emotional support, is at the core of our work.

Our school will be stronger with the support of its community.  We invite you to take advantage of the opportunities to support our students’ learning and experiences.  I look forward to meeting you and working with you this academic year.

Please contact our office if you have any questions or need additional information.

Marco A. Chavez,

Dear Sherman Oaks Families:

I am writing to let you know about some changes that will be coming to Sherman Oaks this summer. Principal Raul Lomeli will be leaving Sherman Oaks at the end of this school year. He remains committed to ensuring that students receive rigorous quality education through their last day of classes in June.

I am happy to announce that your new principal for 2018-19 will be Mr. Marco Chavez.

Mr. Chavez brings to our school a wealth of experience and curriculum knowledge gained in an educational career that spans 23 years. He is coming to us from the San Mateo County Office of Education (SMCOE) where he has been the Administrator for Board/Superintendent Support and Community Relations. One of his responsibilities in this role was to provide leadership and direction for county-wide initiatives.

Before that, he was Director of the SMCOE’s Networks for Success (N4S) team, through which he forged productive partnerships with many of that county’s school districts and helped them make impressive progress in improving student achievement. In that role, he also provided professional development and coaching to teachers in data analysis, strategies for supporting English Learners (ELs), culturally responsive education and parent and family engagement. He also coached principals and district office staff on effectively implementing and monitoring initiatives.

His career includes 16 years in Ravenswood School District, where he served as the Director of Categorical Programs and Multilingual Services, principal and classroom teacher. Prior to that, he was a teacher at River Glen Elementary, in San Jose Unified School District, and was a Professor of English at the University of Colima, in Mexico.

He holds a Master’s degree from San Francisco State and a Bachelor’s degree from Notre Dame de Namur University.

We believe Mr. Chavez provides the leadership and stability necessary for Sherman Oaks to be the premier Spanish Dual Immersion school in the county and beyond. We are coordinating a get-acquainted meeting in the near future to introduce Mr. Chavez to the Sherman Oaks community, and we will send the dates and times once the information is finalized.
