Dear Families:

Yesterday, January 7, 2025, we were informed by PowerSchool, our Student Information System (SIS) platform, that they experienced an international cyber attack at the end of December. This afternoon, our data team was invited to a webinar by PowerSchool to learn more about the situation. We have confirmed that some of our data was accessed. Fortunately, the disclosed information did not include any students’ Social Security Numbers.

Essentially, the data accessed was the student's name, birthdate, address and similar information.  The discernable data fields accessed can be found here.

In the webinar, PowerSchool  shared their corrective actions and confidence that there is no further threat to the data.

While there is no indication that student passwords were compromised, we will supplement our daily monitoring system by providing students with new passwords in the next few days.

We have worked extensively to ensure security in our data systems, such as implementing a Multi-Factor Authentication process, geographic restrictions, suspicious login protections and other security measures. It is unfortunate that, in spite of these efforts, our data was accessed as part of the PowerSchool cyberattack. We will continue to work to ensure our data is secure and will ensure our Student Information System increases security protections.

PowerSchool is monitoring the situation, has engaged a cybersecurity remediation company to prevent future incidents, and will provide our staff with updates for our community. For questions related to PowerSchool’s security procedures, please visit PowerSchool’s website or email Security [at] PowerSchool.com.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we approach the winter break, we want to take a moment to wish you and your family a wonderful holiday season. This is a special time of year, and we hope it brings you opportunities to create happy memories together.

We also want to express our gratitude for your ongoing partnership in your child’s education. We greatly appreciate all of your efforts in ensuring your child has attended school as much as possible so far this year.

We understand that families sometimes wish to extend their time together by planning vacations that last longer than the dates assigned to the school break. While we fully appreciate the value of family time, we want to encourage you to limit trips and vacations to the days indicated on the school calendar for the break. By doing so, you help your child stay on track academically and ensure they don’t miss out on valuable learning opportunities.

Thank you for being mindful of this and for continuing to prioritize your child’s attendance and education.

Wishing you a safe and happy winter break, and we look forward to seeing everyone refreshed and ready to learn in the new year!

Warm regards,

Dr. Shelly Viramontez
Superintendent

Por Favor Prepare Su Correo de Voz - Please Set Up Your Voicemail

This is a kind request on behalf of our teachers and school personnel. Please take some time (maybe this holiday weekend) to set up your voicemail. As a school, we often need to leave important messages regarding your students. We would greatly appreciate it!

This year, each classroom created a unique mission statement, developed jointly by students and teachers. These mission statements are meant to guide behavior and help foster a respectful learning environment. Once the mission is written, each student signs the document to demonstrate their commitment. This process empowers students to take responsibility for their learning and contributes to building a positive school culture. By involving students in the process, Sherman Oaks students are more engaged and invested in building a supportive, inclusive community. We are excited to live out our missions! We will be showcasing some of the mission statements displayed around our campus. Make sure to ask your child about their classroom’s mission statement.

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 to October 15 in the United States. It is a celebration of the different cultures, histories, and the diversity of people of Latin American heritage.

To celebrate, we will be holding a contest for everyone to participate. Students can showcase their creativity by designing a stamp featuring an influential Latin American person or a symbol of Latin culture (for example, an influential Latino, a favorite Latin food, a doll, etc.). Students will receive a template from their teacher but you can also find the template HERE

Submissions must be turned in to the front office or to your student’s teacher before Friday, October 18.

Join us in celebrating all the different cultures in our community and watch a movie in the courtyard with the family. Families are encouraged to sign up to bring food from their countries to share. Food only has to be sample portions. If you would like to sign up to share food you may do so here. Fifth and 8th grade will also be selling food during multicultural night! Let's help them reach their goal in raising funds for Science Camp and Yosemite!

Regular, on-time attendance is essential for building good habits and academic success. As the school year begins, it's important to stress that being in school every day helps your child stay on track with lessons, engage in activities, and strengthen their learning foundation. This leads to better grades and a deeper understanding of the material.

Attendance also instills key life skills like responsibility, punctuality, and perseverance. It fosters strong relationships with peers and teachers, which supports social and emotional growth. Missing even a day or two can set your child back, so prioritizing attendance is crucial. Thank you for your continued partnership to ensure student success!
