Beyond The Bell: How Campbell Union School District’s Expanded Learning Programs Build Future Innovators Through Play

An exploration of the Campbell Union School District's Expanded Learning.

Walk onto any Campbell Union School District (CUSD) campus after the final school bell rings, and you won’t find quiet, empty hallways. Instead, you’ll hear the collaborative chatter of students building LEGO robotics, the tactical call-outs of a soccer game, and the focused quiet of a chess match.

Through its robust Expanded Learning Department, CUSD is redefining what happens outside of regular school hours. By offering a comprehensive suite of before-school, after-school, enrichment classes, performing arts, and summer programs, the District has created a safe, vibrant ecosystem where students don't just pass the time—they explore new passions, think critically, and build meaningful relationships.

The Expanded Learning Department is an umbrella of all the programs we provide outside of the school day. Expanded Learning includes enrichment, drama, morning CampbellCare, afternoon CampbellCare, Crew, Summer Crew, Summer Champions, and Summer drama.

A Foundation Built on Collaboration and Play

The primary mission of CUSD’s Expanded Learning programs is to seamlessly bridge the gap between classroom academics and recreational discovery.

“In our programs, we design fun experiences for students that incorporate what they learn during school hours,” says Martha de Ojeda, Director of the Expanded Learning Department. “They collaborate, innovate, and problem-solve through play!”

The District caters to all grade levels through highly structured, age-appropriate initiatives:

  • CampbellCare (Grades TK–5): The District's flagship elementary program balances academic support with recreational downtime. A typical afternoon includes a "Learning Lounge" dedicated to homework, followed by student-inspired STEAM clubs.
  • The Crew (Grades 6–8): Tailored specifically for middle schoolers gives older students a safe, supervised, yet independent space to unwind, socialize, and participate in engaging group projects; including, enrichment and club opportunities including the musical and Lunchroom Cook-off.

Dive Into the Clubs: Something for Every Passion

What sets CUSD's Expanded Learning apart is its rich tapestry of specialized enrichment programs, multi-week clubs, and extracurricular activities. By partnering with local experts and utilizing student-inspired interests, the District provides specialized activities that often rival private academies.

Students have the unique opportunity to join a diverse variety of clubs and enrichment options, including:

  • STEM and Innovation: From designing mechanical projects in LEGO Robotics (featuring instructors recognized as national Master Builders) to strategic gameplay in chess and digital creation in Minecraft.
  • The Creative and Performing Arts: Dynamic drama and theater programs give students in grades 3–8 a chance to take the stage, fostering confidence, teamwork, and an elevated sense of accomplishment through live performances. Other artistic clubs cover digital art, photography, cooking, and music.
  • Athletics and Team Sports: Physical development is highly emphasized through soccer, basketball, volleyball, ensuring students stay active and master teamwork.

Ensuring Equitable Access for All Families

Understanding that high-quality childcare and enrichment can place a financial strain on families, CUSD heavily prioritizes accessibility. Thanks to state grant initiatives like the After School Education and Safety (ASES) grant and the Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELOP) grant, the district can provide these exact same premier experiences to eligible students at little to no cost. Priority enrollment and grant funding are specifically extended to English Language Learners, foster or homeless youth, and students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch status.

By investing in professional program leaders and diverse course catalogs, CUSD ensures that every child—regardless of background—has a safe space to discover who they are well after the school day ends.

Summertime Smiles: What to Expect in July Across Our District!

Learning and commitment to our core values carries into the summer months. Read below to see what offerings the month of July as in CUSD.

The school hallways might be quiet, but July is bursting with activity across our school district! Whether your family is busy soaking up the sun, diving into a good summer book, or already thinking about the upcoming school year, July is a vital bridge month.

Here is your sneak peek at what is happening, what to prepare for, and how to make the most of the mid-summer weeks.

Keeping Minds Active

Just because school is out doesn't mean the learning stops! Our core value of being a learner can still be engaged through the summer. The Santa Clara Library District has a summer reading program and free activities that are fun for the entire family and Campbell Union students already have a free library account thanks to our partnership with the library district.

Being outside also offers a variety of learning opportunities such as nature walks, studying shadows, identifying shapes/color/numbers in the neighborhood buildings, learning about weather and cloud patterns, and so much more.

Summer is an opportunity to limit screen time and explore creativity, innovation, and the community.

Campus Check-In: Summer Upgrades

If you drive past our schools this month, you will likely see construction crews and maintenance teams hard at work. July is our prime time for deep cleaning and campus upgrades. This month, we are focusing on:

  • Deep Cleaning and Repairs: Giving our campuses a bright, clean, fresh start to the new school year.
  • Playground Safety Swaps: Inspecting all outdoor equipment and refreshing the rubber flooring to ensure recess is safe and fun.
  • Tech Rollouts: Our IT team is busy preparing student devices for a seamless rollout in the fall.

Mark Your Calendar

While August brings the official start of school, July has a few key dates to keep on your radar:

  • July 3 and 6 - District Office is closed for the Fourth of July holiday
  • July 17 - Expanded Learning’s Summer Program’s performance of Disney Junior’s Dare to Dream
  • August 19 - First Day of School

Beat the August Rush: Quick Tips for Caregivers

Want to make the transition back to school a breeze? Here are a few recommendations for this month:

  • The Routine Shift: About two weeks before July ends, start moving bedtimes and wake-up times forward by 10 to 15 minutes every few days. Getting back on a school schedule gradually prevents that first-week-of-school exhaustion!
  • Health Checkups: July is the perfect time to schedule those required kindergarten or new-student immunizations and physicals before clinics get booked solid in August.
  • Independence Practice: If you have an incoming TK/kindergartener, use July to practice opening lunchboxes, zipping up backpacks, and buttoning pants independently.

Stay Connected!

Our District Office remains open Monday through Friday throughout July to answer any enrollment, registration, or general questions you might have. You can also stay up-to-date with our newsletter or by following us on Facebook and Instagram

Enjoy the beautiful sunshine, make wonderful family memories, and we can’t wait to see all of our amazing students back on campus next month!

Our Core Values in the Summer Months

Even though the students are enjoying summer break, our core values of we are learners, we are collaborators, and we are community builders still carry us through the summer months.

Expanded Learning students proudly display their summer art projects.

Summertime is an unique opportunity to lean into our core values of learning and community building. With community and sporting events, outdoor activities, and the library all available, summer is a great time to gather, to explore, and to tackle a reading list.

Did you know that all Campbell Union students are already registered for a free library card? The summer reading program through the library district, “Plant a Seed, Read” runs through July 31, 2026.

Additionally, students who are participating in the summer enrichment program will be performing Disney Junior’s Dare to Dream.

We also know that summertime is often a time to recharge while spending quality time with friends and family. Wherever your summer activities take you, we encourage you to stay curious and to stay engaged with the community. We look forward to seeing you all for the new school year in August.

Celebrating the Class of 2026

Campbell Union School District sends the class of 2026 off with well wishes and a solid foundation.

Congratulations to the class of 2026! Campbell Union School District proudly promoted 607 eighth graders. This accomplished class had 23 seals of biliteracy (total biliteracy attainment) and 19 pursuit of bilingual certificates awarded by the Santa Clara County Office of Education, had the first co-ed flag football team, were the first class - beginning in TK - to have Dr. Viramontez as their superintendent for their entire academic journey, and had 274 students exceeding grade-level standards in English and Math per the 2024-25 California Smarter Balance assessment. However, we know their highlight reel does not stop there.

Although the rising freshmen will be attending a variety of high schools, we send them off with the warmest of wishes and a strong foundation of inquiry and curiosity, a growth mindset, and student agency. We know the class of 2026 is going to accomplish amazing things.
