Thank you for your support and your student’s participation in our Read-a-thon last month. The PTC was able to raise a significant amount of money that will help to continue our many programs and student events. While the Read-a-thon is now over we want to encourage you to continue to read with your child every night. Reading is a skill that your student will use in every subject throughout their education and beyond their formal education. Providing the extra support and reading time with you, either in English or in Spanish, will be extremely beneficial during their transition from learning to read into reading to learn. We also enjoyed seeing those of you who were able to join us at our first in-person Cafecito with the principals this morning. Thank you to those who attended! See attached parent newsletter for more information newsletter

Anytime we make slight changes in a schedule or a procedure it can come with many challenges. Thank you for your help and cooperation during the morning drop-off time when it was raining this week. We had to adjust to having students wait in different areas and were thankful that our students stayed warm and dry while waiting with their umbrellas. As much as we need the rain in our area, we are also happy when our students can keep some of the routines that we have established and also go outside and play during recess.

In this edition of La Voz we have some important information about our Halloween parade, upcoming events, and ways to get involved at Sherman Oaks. See attached parent newsletter for more information

Dropping-off and picking-up students can be a balancing act due to some of the COVID restrictions of being indoors and limiting the crowding of parents on campus. The best plan to drop-off and pick-up your student on a rainy day will be to arrive close to the times that we have scheduled. This will help prevent your student from waiting in the cold for an extended period of time. Sherman Oaks staff will also do our best to have students enter campus and leave campus as close to the time indicated on the schedule.

For students 4th-8th grade, the start time is 8:00am and dismissal is 2:20pm. For students TK-3rd grade, the start time is 8:10am and dismissal is at 2:20pm.

Students waiting

We have some covered areas where students can wait if they arrive early. If you happen to drop your students off early please help us by reminding them to stay under the covered areas and not run out in the rain.

Recess and lunch

If it is raining at the time of recess and lunch we will ensure that students have an area to eat while we can maintain a safe distance to the extent possible while being indoors.

Students and staff were excited to celebrate students' efforts in knowing and exercising the schoolwide expectations and using the tools in their Social Emotional Curriculum. While there are many limitations of having in person assemblies, PBIS support person, Raul Ruiz, broadcasted a live assembly for students to view and for some to attend in person. Our students meeting behavior expectations is instrumental in ensuring they are accessing high levels of education and becoming bilingual and biliterate.

Dear Sherman Oaks Community:

It is with mixed emotions that I communicate to you that I will be leaving my role as the Principal of Sherman Oaks at the end of June. I will be forever grateful and honored to have joined and learned from our students, staff, colleagues and community. It makes me feel different emotions to think of how quickly  my tenure at this special school has gone by and how much we accomplished.  Together, our team re-established our school’s mission, strengthened our dual language program, and created a place where staff and families work together for the benefit of students.

I am happy to share that I have been offered an opportunity that doesn’t present itself very often; I have accepted the position of Associate Superintendent of Education Services at the San Mateo County Office of Education. In this role, I will be able to work with schools and districts in the implementation of instructional systems to meet the educational needs of all students. I will take the many learnings from Sherman Oaks and CUSD and apply them at a larger scale!

With the continued support from Superintendent Viramontez, I know that our new principal will continue leading the good work at our school with a smooth transition. I have made myself available to give support to the new Sherman Oaks team as they feel the need.

Once a Sherman Oaks Aguila, we are always family!

Muchas gracias por todo. I will visit soon to continue to experience the rich cultural events at our school.

Sincerely,

Marco Chavez, Principal
Sherman Oaks School

=============================================================

A Message from Dr. Shelly Viramontez, Campbell Union School District Superintendent

We are all saddened at Principal Marco Chavez’ departure, yet we are also proud that in his next venture as an Associate Superintendent he will continue to make a positive impact in education. He has certainly made a positive impact at Sherman Oaks and our district during his time with us. Under his leadership, the school’s mission, team and program have been strengthened and re-energized for the benefit of the students, staff and families.

Something Mr. Chavez also did well is co-lead. He and Mr. Viramontes were certainly a team in their approach to leading and supporting the school. For that reason, we know the school will continue to thrive as it completes its growth to be a TK-8th grade Dual Immersion school.

Because of the co-leadership, Mr. Viramontes is ready to step into the role of Principal for the 2021-22 school year. He has been an integral part of the great work being done at Sherman Oaks. This consistency of leadership will make for a smoother transition.

We are working to fill the Assistant Principal position soon.
