Sherman Oaks staff included student voice in their recent iReady challenge where students were rewarded for showing growth on their recent diagnostic. When students were asked about how the school can tailor incentives to their interests, they responded by saying they wanted their principals to dress up as a dinosaur and a unicorn. This past week Principal Viramontes and Assistant Principal Gonzalez visited classrooms in costume to provide awards to students demonstrating academic growth.

One of the guiding principles of effective dual immersion schools is sociocultural competence. Learning about and celebrating events such as Dia de los Muertos is one way in which Sherman Oaks celebrates diversity and develops the asset of cultural pride. At Sherman Oaks, the school staff, families, and the community work closely together to systematically provide experiences such as this event where Aztec Dancers gave a presentation and shared stories that teach the history behind the holiday.

There were over 50 submissions for the Sherman Oaks Literary Pumpkin Contest this year. Students painted and decorated pumpkins to look like characters from a book that they have recently read. Categories for the contest included “Most creative” and “Most Funny” and also included submissions from families and staff. This contest served as a great connection between celebrating the holiday spirit and reading.
