Corinne has served as an Administrative Assistant at Sherman Oaks for 27 years. Her presence and expertise in our office will be missed. We wish her well as she plans to become a grandmother and spend more time with family.

San Jose Earthquakes mascot, Q, joined Sherman Oaks students in running and walking laps. Money raised by students during this event will supplement the purchasing of uniforms and equipment in the Sherman Oaks Athletic Program.

Student dancing and singing performances did not fail to disappoint the large gathering of Sherman Oaks community members on May 16th. This event serves as a great representation of the Sherman Oaks mission where students celebrate and reinforce the values of bilingualism and sociocultural competence. Sherman Oaks educators recognize that performing arts is a great vehicle to make learning come to life.

Sherman Oaks partnered with the outdoor learning company, Nature Bridge, to learn the importance of environmentalism and also participate in team building activities in the Yosemite Valley. This trip served as a valuable learning experience, and also a time for 8th graders to spend their last moments together as Sherman Oaks students.

The Sherman Oaks parent group provided daily breakfast and snacks to ensure students were well energized for the many state assessments that occur this time of year. Actions like this help to place a healthy level of importance on state testing.

As part of promoting a college going culture, Sherman Oaks connected with faculty and students at CSU Monterey Bay. 7th students toured the campus and spoke to a panel of students about the benefits of attending colleges like CSUMB.

Sherman Oaks hosted students from SJSU to share information and experiences about their Dual Immersion 90/10 model, their mission and goals for the year, and strategic teaching practices that foster high quality first instruction. The partnership between Sherman Oaks and Bilingual Authorization department has allowed for future teachers to learn at Sherman Oaks while earning their credential and has resulted in many teachers continuing their career at Sherman Oaks.

When students were asked about a problem that they could solve on campus they identified the need for shaded areas to socialize during recess time. Recently, 6th grade students received a grant and met with our facilities and construction department to plan for this project. It is great to see and hear student voice in problem solving on campus while also working with district departments to organize and implement changes.

6th grade students' ability to present in their second language speaks to the culture of trust and community building they have established. This was recently reflected in the 6th grade presentations about African American artists, athletes, historical figures, and influential figures

African Americans have been responsible for the creation of many music genres. During an end-of-the-month assembly students learned about the creation of steel drums and also the many music genres that have been created by African Americans that have contributed to the music that we hear today. This assembly was a great representation of the collaboration between parents and staff as well as the school’s values of multiculturalism.
